I Almost Gave Up on This Midna Pin—Then My Customers Changed My Mind

Earlier this year, I designed a Midna enamel pin inspired by one of my favorite characters from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

When the first sample arrived, I was disappointed. The metal quality was great, but the colors felt too dark and some of the smaller printed details became blurry at pin size. It wasn't the result I wanted, so I decided to pause the project.

Since I had already paid for the samples, I listed the two Midna pin samples on my website anyway.

To my surprise, both sold the same day.

That made me realize the problem wasn't the concept. People liked the design. It simply needed refinement.

So I went back to the factory and started a redesign.

Improving the Colors

The biggest issue was readability.

I lightened Midna's skin tone and adjusted the robe from pure black to a softer gray. These changes helped separate the major shapes and made the character easier to recognize in physical form.

Simplifying the Details

Because the pin size stayed the same, I removed some of the smallest printed elements.

This made the design cleaner and increased the chances of a sharper final enamel pin.

Making It More Accurate

I also updated several details to better match Midna's appearance in Twilight Princess, including the arm markings and leg colors.

Looking back, this project reminded me that successful enamel pin design is not just about adding more details. It's about understanding what details will actually survive production.

The updated Midna enamel pin is currently in production, and I'm excited to see the next sample.
